Travel in Ohiya 2022
There are a few things that tourists need to travel to Sri Lanka so the dream of many tourists is to travel from Kalupahana in Haputale to Ohiya via Udaweriya Estate. This road is another beautiful road in Sri Lanka that runs through mountains and gorges. Also, the devil’s stairway is the same way here. After passing Weerakoon village on this road you will come across Babarakanda waterfall which is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Also after a few more kilometers you can see the Ceylon Falls which is shaped like Sri Lanka. We traveled to Lanka Falls last week, so after visiting Lanka Falls we started our journey again from Babarakanda Holiday Resort. Because we stopped for breakfast and drove to Babarakanda Falls and Lanka Falls from here.
It is about eleven-thirty in the morning. It took us about half a day to see the two waterfalls. We have to travel more than 15 km on this road. We resumed our journey up the narrow winding road. After Babarakanda Falls is the biggest ascent of this devil’s stairway.
With the end of the Babarakanda Falls Reserve, we returned to a pine forest. The pine forest is at the bottom of the road. The pine forests we encountered on the way had a strange beauty. After a few more roundabouts we stopped near the road for a spectacular view from the left. The road runs along a rough slope and we have now reached the height of Babarakanda Falls.
In front, Gommolliya and Balathuduwa mountain ranges sloping to the south and Babarakanda falls calmly. Between the two valleys, the valley of the dam is a spectacular sight. So at times like this, Yasas’ camera has no freedom at all. We started the journey again because we had to go a long way.
If this is not the case then maybe there is a problem with the two elbows. The road is paved with concrete so that even a car can reach the top. After two difficult bends we came to the top of the mountain and came parallel to the last mountain and we came to a wonderful place to turn the other side of this mountain. This place is called U CUT because it cuts the mountain in the shape of the English letter U and makes its way from the mountain to the other side. After another 500 meters after the U CUT we passed the dam that creates the Babarakanda Falls. The water is much colder here than at the foot of Babarakanda Falls. The reason for this is that we have now risen to a height of about five hundred meters from the foot of Babarakanda Falls.
After another hundred meters, we stopped at the side of the road with the intention of going to another wonderful place. If you want to go up to Babarakanda Falls, you have to go from this place. We stopped the vehicle at this place and started descending again. That is to say, we had reached a height of about three hundred meters above the top of Babarakanda Falls and had descended such a distance. We came to the pine forest we came across at the foot of Bababaranda Falls, coming through the thorn bushes that fell among the turpentine trees in between. This is the most dangerous place to be on this trip. Due to the steep slope and the pine leaves, if you slip on this side, you will inevitably end up below the rock wall of Babarakanda Falls, so this is a dangerous trek.
For the safety of all of us, Sameera used a branch of a tree to remove the pine leaves that had fallen on the footpath and began to descend. We all followed that path because safety is very important on trips like this. After a difficult journey we reached the top of Onna Babarakanda.
We climbed the mountain again and reached the parking lot. We started our journey again and after another 300 meters we reached a wonderful place. The road that came through the jungle reached an open area at once at a large bend. This place is also known as the Sand Bend, so it’s another beautiful place to visit on this trip so everyone who travels along this road should not forget to stop and take a couple of photos from here. Below you can see the Kuragala range and several small and large areas to the left of the creek on the way to Lanka Falls, to the left of the fort and below the Wangod rock to the end of the dam number. By now people are used to a lot of things in this sand dune but not all of them are people who love the environment because of the arrack bottles and polythene bags left where we could not be sure. We will not say no to you enjoying the environment but you should keep in mind that there are other people after you who can enjoy the beauty of this environment and our request is to leave this beauty to them.
From story to story we came to the middle of Udaweriya Estate or to the middle of this village and halfway up the last hill we had to move to the other side of this mountain so together here we find a V cut a complete V rock cut at the top of the hill The road from here is cut to the other side. The place we came from here is called West Haputale. A board erected in the days of the white man can still be seen on the other side of this V Cut on the Ohio side. We are now ready to go the other way through this V Cut. This road was built by cutting a mountain more than 100 feet away. When you reach the other side of this V Cut you will see a huge precipice and a path built down the four bends of that precipice. Yes we have to go down now along that road. If you can’t take some of these bends, you have to reverse and go downhill, so you have to drive very carefully here in places like this.
So when you look at this place, it looks like a giant paddle, which is why this place is called the Devil’s Pad Pad. So in the past, there was a board with a skull and two bones on it, which must have meant that it was such a dangerous place.
So it was past seven in the evening when we reached Ohio after another difficult trek along the Udaweriya Estate after the Devil’s Pad Pell. So, if you want to enter this journey, you do have to enter Kalupahana in the morning or Babarakanda. There is not enough time to make this trip to the top of Lanka Falls and Babarakanda. So it was getting dark by the time we reached the end of this journey. So today we say goodbye with the intention of meeting again in Sri Lanka at such a beautiful event.
